The objectives of this site is to determine how Southern Phelps families were related in the 18th and 19th centuries and to determine their origins. Researchers of nearly all southern Phelps lines reach a brick wall once back to the 1700s. This is especially true of Phelps origins in Virginia and NC.   While genealogies going back to England have been reported, we know of no documented paper trail to prove that.  By posting documented research and DNA testing results we hope to finally prove their origins. Recent DNA testing has shown clearly that the New England Phelps are not related to any (so far) of the southern Phelps, with the possible exception of the Phelps line with origins in Perquimans Co, NC.  Further, we have proven that two previously unrelated Phelps lines were in fact related.

This research site will provide a repository for articles and source material supporting this objective.  A major function of this site is to index many of the southern Phelps articles at the Phelps Family Research Blog.

Male Phelps Y-DNA testing is also underway to give scientific support to ancestry "paper trails".  Information here will help us find male Phelps descendants for DNA testing.  See the  Phelps Y-DNA Project.  Financial assistance is possible.

We welcome your documented articles.  If you have information to contribute or want to be tested as part of the DNA project, please contact Doug Phelps,   dphelps61 AT alumni.wfu.edu  or Mark Phelps markphe AT gmail.com   (Replace the blanks and AT with @)

Submitters include among others:  Ed Phelps, Mary Galgan;  Brenda Emory; JC Rogers; Marilyn Phelps; Douglas K Phelps, Mark Phelps, Douglas Payne.

All southern Phelps researchers should be aware of the list of documented Phelps who arrived in VA, Md, and the West Indies in the colonial period.  This extensive list is An Indexed List of Known Southern Phelps Immigrants in Colonial America

Georgia Background Information

Contributed by Mary Galgan

In the beginning of the 1800s our government drove the Native American Indians from the area that is now GA.  They did this to open up new lands for settlement.  See the website: http://ngeorgia.com/history/indianla.html When the United States took the western claims from Georgia in 1802, the federal government promised to remove the Indians from Georgia soil. That year, and again in 1804, the federal government secured cessions of land for the state. Georgia changed the headright system to one it deemed fairer, where any white man with $4.00 could enter a lottery for land stolen from Native Americans.

Haplogroup E1a has also been detected among samples obtained from Moroccan Berbers, Sahrawis, Burkina Faso, northern Cameroon, Senegal, Sudan, Egypt, and Calabria (including both Italian and Albanian inhabitants of the region).[ The small presence (<4%) of Haplogroup E1a in North Africa and Europe is generally attributed to the slave trade, as it is characteristic of West African populations.]" 2008
