The ocean bluffs of Elk Head are whipped by sea winds that prune the vegetation to about waist height.  Shrubs, herbs and ferns predominate.  The pink flowers of salal (Gaultheria shallon) and the blue flowers of Douglas Iris (Iris douglasiana) are very showy in May and June.
