Harbor seals stay very close to shore.  If you are quiet and approach slowly, you can view them from as little as 50 feet away.  Don't approach if they are onshore.  You may hear sea lions barking further offshore.  Sea lions average a little larger than harbor seals, have more pointed snouts, and lack distinctly spotted fur.
