Finding a Home in Eureka and Surroundings
The median home price in
Northern California is much lower than that in Central or Southern California.
However, compared to many other regions of the US, a California ZIP code does
command a premium.
There are not to many apartment complexes available, and
many people who move here choose to rent a single family house. Renting before
buying allows you to get a feel for the community and to explore the
neighborhoods that are suitable for you.
A nice, average single
family house with a little bit of yard can be found for $300,000 to $450,000. If
you desire a bigger house or lot in a more upscale neighborhood, your starting
price is around $600,000. There are barely any homes in the 1.5 million Dollar
range, unless they include dozens or hundreds of acres of land. The Pink Lady, a Victorian house in downtown
Eureka next to the exclusive, private Ingomar Club, was sold last year for 1.3 milion.
The Carson Mansion is the most outstanding building of
Eureka, but there are many other beautifully painted Victorian houses in Eureka.
Ferndale, too, has beautiful Victorian homes, with the Gingerbread Mansion
being the most prominent one. Ferndale, home to the Humboldt County
Fair
each August, is a very desirable, rural place to
live, but with a driving time of more than 30 minutes to the hospital it might
not be an option for an on-call anesthesiologist. (Ferndale even made it
into Legoland!)
Cutten, in the
non-incorporated area of south Eureka, has many beautiful homes in a nice,
green family setting. Driving time from Cutten
to St. Joseph Hospital is less than 10 minutes.
N, O, and P Streets north of Harris Street offer a calm
and green neighborhood with homes in the upper price range. These homes are
generally older, some dating to the 50s and 60s. Driving time from the hospital
is less than 5 minutes.
Lundbar Hills is within walking
distance of the Eureka Golf Course. Named after its developers Fred Lundblade
and Bill Barnum, it offers a pleasant suburban setting, with new
homes being added to the existing 50s neighborhood in recent construction phases.
Fickle
Hill Road and Diamond
Drive in Arcata have a little elevation, and you will find many up-scale homes
with a view there.
Many wonderful homes are hidden, at the end
of long driveways. On Buhne Street and the southern part of F Street for
example, many driveways lead to hidden treasures with a private setting that do not
even make you think you are living in a city. Drive-by exploring will therefore yield
limited results, and it might be a good idea to get a realtor with access to
the listings in order to find the right home for you.
