1970 - 1990
In August, 1970, Palmetto High School was created from Campbell High School. For six months the two student bodies attended classes together at the Campbell site; Campbell students in the morning and Palmetto students in the afternoon.
On February 22, 1971, after six months of double sessions at Campbell, 333 Palmetto students and twenty-eight faculty members entered the new facility. There were only three grade levels the first year; 8th, 9th and 10th. The first graduation was held on May 24th, 1973 with ninety-five seniors receiving diplomas.
As the school age population grew, so did the building. Two main halls and the shop area were added in 1973. Another wing was to be added but the anticipated population growth in South Fulton never materialized.
Throughout the twenty years of Palmetto High School, the school has been guided administratively by five principals. Hal Shields was the first principal. In 1972 Tom Richardson replaced Mr. Shields and served until 1976. Frank Sims took over the responsibilities until 1980. Calvin Turner replaced Mr. Sims and served until 1983. The last principal of Palmetto High School, John Givens, began serving in 1983.
The school mascot, The Raider, was named for soldiers who marched through the area on their way to the Mexican War in 1847. The Raiders have a rich winning tradition in Interscholastic sports. During the 70's region championships were won by the boys basketball team, the girls and boys track teams, the wrestling team and the football team. The wrestling team won two state championships. During the 80's, the football team captured 10 consecutive region championships and two state titles.
In the 70's, the Future Homemakers of America, the Chess Club, the Future Teachers of America and the Science Club were among the first extra-curricular activity groups. In the 80's, students participated in the Future Business Leaders of America, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Spanish Club, the Beta Club and the National Honor Society. Throughout, the Marching Band (The Pride of Palmetto) has capably represented the school and the community.
Two decades have passed since the separation from Campbell that created Palmetto High School. The two student bodies will again be reunited in August 1990 in the newly created Creekside High School.
Many lives have been touched by former and present Raiders. The building is "closing", but the memories will remain "open" forever. The Palmetto "family" is merely changing addresses.
Coat of Arms History
The Coat-of-Arms of Palmetto High School includes symbols of great significance relating to the history of the school area and the pride, spirit, and aspirations of the administration, faculty, and student body.
The Hat at the top and the sabres dividing the Coat-of-Arms are symbolic of the "Raider"; the mascot of Palmettto High School. The "Raider" was chosen in recognition of the regiment of soldiers from South Carolina en route to the War with Mexico in 1847, who chose a campsite in the vicinity of the school.
The Palmetto Tree represents the symbol of the state of South Carolina, and the fact that the city of Palmetto was given its name to honor the troops from
South Carolina who had previously camped in the area.
The Open Book is symbolic of academic pursuit and the importance of learning in the lives of all who attend Palmetto High.
The Roman Numerals LXX indicate the date of origin of Palmetto High School; 1970.
The Block Letter "P" gives recognition to those who will proudly bear the letter as a symbol of academic and athletic achievement.
