The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for the initiation of and follow-up investigation of most felony and serious criminal offenses which may be beyond the scope and/or expertise of the Patrol Division. The types of crimes normally investigated by this division includes violent crimes against persons, sexual crimes, domestic violence, property crimes and white-collar crimes. There are 3 full time criminal investigators assigned to this division. These investigators are trained in the techniques of interview and interrogation, in advanced techniques for processing and handling crime scenes, evidence collection and analyses, in development and use of informants, in polygraph examination and in many other areas applicable to specific types of crimes. They are on active duty during normal business hours, Monday thru Friday, and they are on call twenty-four hours a day to support the Patrol Division and to personally respond to major crime scenes as needed. Other duties performed by the Criminal Investigations Division include the surveillance of individuals and places, intelligence gathering, undercover operations and other specialized activities.
Additionally, the Ruston Police Department equips and maintains a mobile crime scene unit that operates under the direction of the Criminal Investigations Division. This Crime Scene vehicle, configured from a retired ambulance obtained from the Ruston Fire Department, contains the equipment, materials and supplies necessary to thoroughly process a crime scene and collect evidence.
