Personnel of the Ruston Police Department Communications Division are the first contact that the public often has with first responders in times of emergency. Our Communications Division consists of 5 full-time dispatchers. Our dispatchers are also backed up by our records division personnel. The role of our communications personnel is very challenging and rewarding and requires significant knowledge, skill and ability in
responding to citizen need and dispatching police officers. The work is often fast paced, time critical, stressful and demanding and requires good communications skills, the ability to multi-task and resource management skill.
Each year, our communications center handles approximately 54,000 incoming calls that require some type of dispatch action by our communications personnel. Several thousand of these calls are true emergencies where life and/or property is endangered.
Our communications equipment includes a 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone system, Computer Aided Dispatch, multi-frequency computerized radio system, Graphical Information System (GIS Mapping), and Automatic Vehicle Location via Global Position Satellite system. Our communications personnel also have computer access to local, state and national criminal databases, motor vehicle databases and drivers license records.
Personnel of the Ruston Police Department Communications Division have a job like no other. It is a rewarding career for people who want a job that provides personal satisfaction derived from assisting the public in their time of need.
