Grambling State University was placed on lockdown this
afternoon after shots were fired during a fight that
culminated a series of on- and off-campus brawls that began
Thursday night.
No one was hit by gunfire and order had been restored late
this afternoon. The campus was closed to outsiders but
students with university IDs would be allowed to walk around
campus in small groups, police said.
Three students have been arrested on disorderly conduct
charges. The suspected shooter was still at large, GSU Police
Chief Jefferson Walker said.
Two people were slightly injured in fights that followed
the shooting.
Law enforcement converged on the Lincoln Parish campus
early this afternoon and restored order. SWAT teams with K9s
went building to building.
The campus will be closed to outsiders until Saturday but
students with a university ID will be allowed to come and go
tonight in groups no larger than three, Walker said.
University of Louisiana System spokeswoman Jackie Tisdell
said students and others were fighting in the campus dining
hall and two shots were fired.
Fights had broken out on campus before and after that one,
police said.
Law officers sent to restore order said they dealt with a
very large and unruly crowd.
The fight that led to gunshots at 11 a.m. was a carryover
from two off-campus fights the night before during the annual
SpringFest and it carried over to campus today, police and the
university newspaper said.
State troopers, Lincoln Parish sheriff's deputies, and
Grambling and Ruston police were assisting university police
deal with the situation.
