RUSTON — A five-hour standoff involving authorities
and a single, apparently emotionally troubled woman ended early
Friday afternoon in a residential area when police escorted the
woman from the home and took her for medical care.
Ruston Police Chief Steve Rogers confirmed the tense situation
was resolved at about 2:20 p.m. That's when a half-dozen officers
entered the single-family dwelling on a dead-end street and found
the woman at a table. A weapon was nearby, police said, but the
woman did not attempt to reach for it when police entered. Four
officers stood ready in the backyard, prepared to enter the home if
needed.

Rogers said police received a
call about 9:20 a.m. concerning the woman's situation. Rogers would
only say that the woman's situation was "possibly medical" in nature
and that police feared she might be suicidal. Ruston police,
Lincoln Parish deputies, Choudrant police and Ruston firefighters
responded to the call in a neighborhood south of Interstate 20.
Authorities secured the scene and began talking with the woman,
whose daughter apparently took part in the discussions.
Police entered the home after Rogers and others determined that
the woman might pose a threat to her own safety or the safety of
others, the chief said.
Rogers said there were no arrests made and no one was injured. He
described the law enforcement effort as "very good" and
"coordinated."
