Ruston man transferred to Shreveport following Interstate 20 crash

A 23-year-old man was airlifted to Shreveport with serious injuries following a crash with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 in Ruston.

Ruston police said the crash occurred at 11:24 a.m. in the westbound lane of Interstate 20 at the Farmerville Highway exit.

Ruston police handled the preliminary investigation and said ongoing construction was taking place on I-20 between Exit 86 and Exit 85 at the time of the crash.

Traffic was stopped while a construction crew was setting a beam on a bridge that is under construction.

Capt. Bill Davis said that a 2007 freightliner tractor-trailer pulling a box trailer of paint was stopped in traffic in the right westbound lane, between the foot of the exit ramp and the Farmerville Highway overpass.

The truck driver was identified as Daniel L. Fredericks Jr., 47, of Pottsville, Texas.

Police said a 1997 Ford pickup truck, driven by Jim T. Best, 23, of Ruston, was westbound in the right lane of Interstate 20 and apparently did not realize that traffic ahead of him had stopped.

When Best did see the stopped tractor-trailer, he attempted to swerve to the left but hit the rear of the trailer.

Best was airlifted by Pafford Ambulance Air-1 Helicopter from the scene to LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

Officers said Fredericks and his passenger, Maria Bochicohio, 47, of Temple, Texas, were not injured.
