The Ruston Board of Aldermen has approved a former
Lincoln Parish sheriff's investigator as the new police chief of the
Ruston Police Department.
Following a lengthy process in which one qualified candidate was
turned down by the board in a meeting last week, aldermen agreed 4-1
to welcome Stephen Rogers as the head of the department.

Voting for the appointment of
Rogers were Jim Pearce, Jed Lewis, Luvell Thurman and Elmore
Mayfield. Marie Riggs voted against the nomination. Rogers was
recommended by Mayor Dan Hollingsworth at a special meeting Tuesday
morning.
Hollingsworth said Rogers still had to pass a psychological
evaluation, which will probably be conducted next week.
Hollingsworth said nine applicants passed the chief's test, and
Rogers was in the "top tier" of those who applied for the job.
Rogers worked with Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries more than
four years before landing a job at the Lincoln Parish Sheriff's
Office.
He was employed there more than 12 years and spent most of his
time in the investigation division.
In recent years, he has been employed with the Ruston Police
Department as a patrol officer.
Last week, board members voted 3-2 against the nomination of
Capt. Bill Davis for the spot. Davis has been employed with Ruston
police for 24 years and is the head of the patrol division.
The position has been open since spring when former Chief Randal
Hermes retired.
Hermes later accepted a new position as Louisiana Tech
University's police chief.
