“It was an honor to serve with you, Captain.”

 His dying voice hit her emotions like a nuclear blast.

 

She couldn’t respond, her throat closing

 as silently, she fought her sobs.

 

She ached to say the same to him.

She hadn’t lied when she told him nothing was regretted.

 

Sickened, she raged at herself.

 

‘It’s my fault he’s dying.

Why couldn’t I make the damn thing work?’

 

Obeying his last selfless order, alone she climbed,

to then encounter a hostile ice world.

 

Strangely relieved, she raced back to him.

She had to tell him:  The honor had been wholly hers.
