24. Willie (Bill) SYKES-
Bill worked for the Missouri and Pacific Railroad for years, but was fired because of his drinking. Bill and his father Vander, help keep the bootleggers in Mulberry in business. I don't remember Bill ever dating any women, but he was always a hard worker. When he wasn't working, he and his father were generally drinking or drunk. Both smoked pipes and chewed tobacco and there was enough of the wood matches around the house to keep the kids busy picking them up and playing different match stick games. Bill married Mrs. Millie Paterson after her husband was killed by a train just west of Mulberry. They moved to eastern Arkansas after Bill was let go from the railroad and was doing farm labor at the time of their death.
Bill and Millie and a couple of their children were killed in a tornado that came through the small town where they lived in an area close to West Helena, Arkansas.

We all knew that we were in for it and expected to get our rear ends thrashed, but Aunt Ruby just gave Jim a harsh rearend chewing and told him to throw out that mess and get over to their house and get a pot from the kitchen (along with the ingredients for the stew) to cook the stew and if she ever caught us trying to cook in rusty containers again, she would set all of our tails on fire with her strap.

The night that Vernon and Lois was to get married, our whole family, & Vernon & Lois was at Rudy & Faye Steele (Vernon's sister) and Rudy told the story about when a friend of his got married, he ask the preacher how much he owed him for marring him. The preacher said that he didn't charge anything, but he could give him just whatever he thought it was worth. The guy pulled a large red apple out of his pocket, handed it to the preacher and ask the preacher to cut it in half and he would be by later for half of it. We all went to Alma, Ark. where Vernon & Lois got married. As soon as the preacher finish, Vernon ask the preacher what he owed him, Rudy handed Vernon a big red apple and told him to give it to the preacher for marring them, Vernon & Lois both was embarrassed.
One of the things I remember about Vernon was he loved to drive a car or truck (truck driving was what he did for a living) He had to show off how well his car would start and how quickly he could jump in his car and speed off. One day he was parked in front of our house and Don & I hooked one of those car bombs to the spark plug so that whenever you start the car it would set off the bomb with a loud whistle and a lot of smoke. When Vernon jumped into his car, by the time he hit the starter, he was in forward movement as soon as it started and when that bombe went off, he bailed out of that car just a cussing. Fortunately, the engine stalled and did no damage to his car, but Uncle Vernon was upset to no end and embarrassed because he thought his car had blown up.
