Boye - Plated Brass/Steel

This shuttle was patented April 17, 1923 by Gustav A. Carlson of Chicago, Illinois with The Boye Needle Company as assignee. It was the first shuttle made from one-sheet of stamped/folded metal. The original (top) was made of brass, a later one (bottom) switched to plated steel. The original (top) has the following verbiage:
"BOYE" IMPROVED (arced across top of side shown)
MADE IN U.S.A (on left and right of center boss)
-PAT.- (around top of boss)
APR. 17, '23 (around bottom of boss)
THE BOYE NEEDLE CO. CHICAGO. (arced across bottom edge)
"BOYE" IMPROVED (arced across top of opposite side)
(same patent notice around boss as on other side)
MORE THREAD - LESS KNOTS (arced across bottom edge)
The lower shuttle substitutes TATTING SHUTTLE for "BOYE" IMPROVED and leaves out the patent notice. The original bobbin is also brass, has a thread hole in both flanges, and is stamped "EXTRA #3 1/2 BOBBINS 5¢" on both sides. The lower shuttle's steel bobbin has the holes, but is stamped "EXTRA #3 BOBBINS" on both sides. The original shuttle was intentionally sized so that the bobbin would press on to the heel for winding (click here for original package with winding instructions). Subsequent "Boye's" have forgotten this feature and do not fit. Ever wonder why there are holes? I will let that up to the browser to guess - they were for a specific purpose! Purchased from Michelle Lee of Patterns from the Past 1999.
