Hard Rubber - Vulcanite

Hard Rubber/Vulcanite-Dan Rusch-Fischer
Often mislabelled gutta percha 99.99% of the time, highly vulcanized rubber was known mostly in the U.S. as Vulcanite and in the U.K as Ebonite. It has a distinct brownish-red glow under UV and appears a mottled greenish-brown-black to jet black in daylight. When rubbed briskly with the fingers it emits a pungent, sulfurous odor. Secured with exposed brass rivets, these two common sizes were sold from the 1890's through mailorder sources such as Montgomery Wards and Sears, Roebuck and Co. Purchased from Michelle Lee of Patterns from the Past 1999.
