"The name 'Hodnette' is French in origin, and is a composition of Anglo-Saxon and French terms. The name was used originally in France as Hoddinott; and is a combination of the two words 'Hodd' and 'In-ot.' The term Hodd was the ancient nomenclature for 'Hood' and the surname 'Hoddinott' denotes wearer of a hood. From the original French surname 'Hoddinott' comes the modern French surnames 'Hodd' and 'Hodnett.' It is evident that the surname Hodnette was used in Britain a few decades after the Norman Conquest.
