The Neighborhood Band - Rick, Laura, Martin, Julie, Kurt

Welcome

Congratulations!  You've just stumbled across the only band on the Internet that hasn't existed in over 30 years.  The Neighborhood Band (1977-1982) was never a powerful or influential force in the history of rock music.  We did, however, accumulate enough material to produce one bitchin' little Website.

The History of the Band

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  A short time later, Rick and Kurt were talking on the phone.  Rick says to Kurt, "Hey, maybe we should start our own rock band."  Kurt responds with, "I was just thinking the same thing."  And thus was a mighty empire forged.  Just not all at once.

The first incarnation was comprised of  Rick on bass guitar, Kurt on drums, and Kurt's younger brother Joe on acoustic guitar.  But since nothing ever came of this grouping, it's hardly worth mentioning now.

The years between 1977 and 1980 were a time of learning.  Kurt and Rick, both involved in taking music lessons, gathered as musicians only occasionally.  Little or no serious activity took place during these years with one exception.  In the summer of 1978, Rick composed the basic musical score for Kurt's song Greasy Doorknobs (an instrumental version of which can be downloaded from the Media page).  Joe had better things to do, like having a real life, and bowed out.

Somewhere between September 1980 and Christmas of that year, Kurt was introduced to Laura and her friend Julie.  When it was learned that Julie played guitar and Laura played keyboard, nobody had to slap Kurt and Rick upside the head before they asked the pair to join the group.  But there was still one element missing.

Enter Martin, who remarkably went from the zero point to being an accomplished lead guitarist in only one year.  Where he came from no one remembers.  One day he wasn't there, the next day he was the band's producer.  Who knew?

The Neighborhood Band was born.

The rest was practice, practice, practice.  The glamour of being a rock star looks appealing, but what they never tell you is how many hours of work goes into learning to play one song.  And then having to play that song over and over and over until you're so sick of it that you hope you never hear the damned thing again, and then having to play it one more time.

Being in a band is work!  Lots and lots of work with little or no pay, but plenty of equipment expenses.  It's a hobby, not a career choice.

The Neighborhood Band was dissolved after the May 10th, 1982 concert.  The band never experienced an official breakup.  It was simply time for all the members to move on.  Quietly, without fanfare, they all went their separate ways.  They were never heard from again.

Until now...
