Conclusion

The Johnstons ultimately wound up in Cleveland, OK where Grandfather was working in the oil fields. My Grandfather Farris found work at the same location and that was how my mother and father met.

If nothing else, I think this travel diary proves that pioneers were real people just like you and me, with the same fears and doubts, the same desires for stability, and the same need for a better quality of life.

In my mind, it certainly dispels the Hollywood myth of the pioneer woman dutifully following her husband and agreeing with whatever he wanted to do. Although Almeda was the very essence of gentility and loved Charles beyond words, she was also human. These were people who endured hard lives to get to the point that their children might be able to have a life that was a little easier. They were never rich in terms of material resources, but they were abounding in the riches of good character and love for their family.

And, if they happen to be looking down on me just now, I'd like to say, "Thank you…I'm proud to be your grandson."
