Life at Camp Funston
Another Camp Funston?
Shortly after the Southern District commanding general, Major General Frederick Funston, died in February 1917, the Leon Springs Military Reservation, twenty miles northwest of San Antonio, was renamed Camp Funston in his honor.
However, someone then realized there was another Camp Funston in Kansas. Perhaps sensing the confusion that might ensue, and because Funston was a native Kansan, the Texas Camp Funston was a short time later renamed Camp Stanley for Brigadier General David S. Stanley.
So, for a brief time in early 1917, there were two Camp Funstons.
