CHAINING PINS

Chaining Pins were used to mark measured distances on the ground.   Formed from 3/16" diameter metal rod, they are 14 inches in length and pointed at one end with an eye at the other.  The pin is stuck in the ground, usually inclined to the vertical, and at right angles to the chain, the measurement being made to the center of the pin where it enters the ground.
