Nineteenth century drawing instruments were
not totally unlike those used today. The material used in their construction,
however, was considerably more exotic. The staffs of the ruling pens were sometimes
made of turned ivory or brass as those in the above illustration. Folding scales
were made of brass, ivory or wood. Note the enameled container in the top corner of
the lower section of the velvet lined case. Triangles were constructed of brass and
wood. The brass was sandwiched between two layers of wood veneer - the
assembly being pinned together with brass studs.
