About the Author
Valerie A. Hodge-Williams, MA, PT was born in Cheshire, England in 1948 and emigrated to the United States in 1973. She now lives in Maryland with her husband, John, and three daughters.

Ms. Hodge-Williams is a licensed physical therapist who, prior to becoming a full-time writer, spent 27 years involved in direct patient care. The last 18 years of' her physical therapy career were spent in home care and hospice, where her passion and specialty were focused on understanding and improving the recovery process of patients following catastrophic illness or trauma. During these years, her knowledge and expertise were greatly enhanced by her own personal experiences with major illness, including not only the breast cancer, but also a permanent brain injury, chronic fatigue syndrome, and meningitis.

Ms. Hodge-Williams earned her Masters Degree in Adulthood and Aging, with a specialization in Suffering & Survival. She has delivered key note lectures and seminars on:

- Suffering: a stage of healing
- Coping with the stresses and distresses of illness
- When illness strikes a family
- Survival issues when dealing with chronic illness
- Why don't we & how can we teach our children to handle suffering?
