Other evidence indicates that Ransom J. VIALS³⁴⁴ was born in 1833.⁴³⁴ He was born on 8 Mar 1838 in Strawberry Plains, Jefferson County, Tennessee.⁴³⁵ He was involved in court proceedings on on 6 Sep 1841 in , Roane County, Tennessee.⁴³⁶ From the Roane County Court Minutes:
Ordered by the Court that the Sheriff of this County proceed to take into his care and keeping Elizabeth Voils, Matilda Voiles, Eliza & Jacob Voiles and Ransom Voiles so that he have them here at the next term of court so that the Court may bind said children out.

Note - on the same day John Voiles, age 15, was apprenticed out to Thomas Jones. He was involved in court proceedings on on 7 Feb 1842 in , Roane County, Tennessee.⁴³⁷ From Roane County Court minutes:
Ordered by the Court that the sheriff of Roane County proceede to take into his care Ransom Voils an orphan boy who is now at John Freths [Fritts?] so that he may have him here at the next term of this court for the court to bind out said boy.

Although I continued to read the Roane County Court minutes I found no other mentions of any of the Voils children. I believe that their mother, Sarah, took the children to Knox County where she remarried in 1847. Matilda and Nancy E. appear in the 1850 census with their mother. Jacob appears in the census living with the John Siebers family. Ransom appears in the 1850 census living with the William Morris family. This census was actually taken on January 13, 1920, 9 days after Ransom's death. He died on 4 Jan 1920 in Cherokee, Colbert County, Alabama.⁴⁴³ I believe Ransom was living in Maury County TN in 1900, although I cannot find him in the census. Numerous papers in his pension file from that time period indicate that he was living in Maury County, with 4 motherless grandchildren.
Ransom Viles gave a lengthy deposition in his pension battle on December 5, 1905. Because he did not remember specific details like the date of his birth, the examining officers in his pension case believed that he was hiding something. He did have a family Bible that he said was given to him by his mother, but it contained only his date of birth and the dates of birth (and death) of his wife, Martha, and his children and grandchildren. The Bible was damaged in the 1900 Columbia TN tornado and was said to be smudged and dirty.
Ransom stated that he lived 12 miles west of Knoxville until he was about 12 or 14 years old. After that he lived in Knoxville while he learned his trade (blacksmithing) and then moved to Kingston, TN. It was while he was living in Kingston that he enlisted in the Army.
He stated that his parents were Ransom Viles and Sarah Ann Wyce Viles, and that both were death at the time of the deposition (1905). He had 8 brothers and sisters (not listed in the deposition) - all were dead by 1905.
The deposition doesn't give any further information about Ransom's father, Ransom Viles, although it seems apparent that the father did not play a major role in Ransom's life. Ransom does mention his mother several times throughout his deposition, but his father is never mentioned after Ransom's initial identification of his parents. At one point, Ransom's mother, Sarah Ann lived with him. Parents: Ransom VILES and Sarah Ann WYCE.
