Other evidence indicates that James Henry VILES⁵³³ was born about 1823.⁵³⁴ Lovie was not certain, but thought that her husband was about 40 when he died in 1863, and she stated that he was born and raised in Anderson County. He was born in 1825 in , , Tennessee. He was involved in court proceedings on on 5 Dec 1836 in , Anderson County, Tennessee.⁵³⁵ Henry Viles, age 11, was apprenticed to Obediah Ashlock. Henry was described as an orphan. Samuel Voiles, age 6, was apprenticed six months earlier to Samuel Davidson. Samuel was also described as an orphan. He lived in District 10, Anderson County, Tennessee between 1847 and 1863.^536,537 He was shown on tax lists for Anderson County for this period. There are no tax lists for Anderson County for 1843-1846, so it's possible that he would have also appeared on earlier lists, had they been available. He was described as low, heavy set man, with gray eyes and a light complexion..⁵³⁴ The pension file of James Viles is quite interesting. James Henry Viles went by the names of James Viles «u»and«/u» Henry Viles; when Lovey Viles filed her pension application in 1890, it was initially thought that she was filing on the record of James Viles of Knox County. A report by Thos. A. Mayes, Special Examiner, reveals that Lovey's husband [Henry] and James Viles were cousins, and that James Viles was an illegitimate child of a sister of Lovey's husband's father. This James Viles is also known to be a nephew of Penelope Viles Kirby, also of Anderson and Knox Counties. I interpret this statement to mean that Margaret Viles, who is thought to be James' mother, was a sister to Henry's father.
I believe Henry's father could be Levi Voiles, probably the same Levi Voiles who lived in Greene County in 1830 and then disappeared from Greene County immediately after the 1830 census. According to Anderson County Court minutes, a Levi Voiles died in Anderson County in 1834, and Henry was apprenticed a little over a year later. Another possibility for James Henry Viles' father is the Larken Voles who appeared in the 1830 Anderson County census and then vanished, never to appear on another public record that I can find anywhere.
As it turned out, the Army had no record of James Henry Viles' service in the war, and his widow did not receive a pension.
These pension papers were not in a separate file, but were mixed in with James Viles' pension papers - the same James Viles referred to above.

James Henry VILES and Lovey PATTERSON were married on 20 Dec 1845 in , Anderson County, Tennessee.³⁵⁶ There is no record for this marriage in Anderson County; the pension file is the only place I have seen a date for their marriage.
