Ransom VILES was born about 1796 in , , Virginia. Other evidence indicates that he was born about 1796. In both the 1860 and 1870 censuses, Ransom's birthplace is listed as North Carolina. He lived in , Greene County, Tennessee in 1828.⁵⁵⁷ Ransom Voyles, Henry Voyles & Levi Voyles were all listed in Captain Davis' Company. 1828 is the first available tax roll for Greene County (after 1816). Ransom Voyles did not appear again in Greene County, TN. He lived in District 8, Anderson County, Tennessee in 1837.⁶⁰⁰ Ransom Voiles appeared on an 1837 Anderson County, Tennessee tax roll. He did not appear on the 1838 and 1839 tax rolls in this book. He did show up on an 1838 Anderson County Tennessee tax roll that was microfilmed; there were actually two tax rolls for 1838 on the microfilm - Ransom was listed on one of them, and wasn't listed on the other one. He lived in District 15, Roane County, Tennessee in 1838.⁶⁰¹ Ransom Viles was listed on an 1838 tax list for District 15, Roane County, Tennessee. A Conrad Voiles appears on the tax rolls of Greene County 1837-1841. This is the only other Conrad Voiles I have ever seen. At this time, Jonathan Voiles is also shown in the same tax district with Conrad Voiles. The 1840 Greene County census only lists Henry Voyles and Elizabeth Voyles as heads of household in Greene County. Henry's household only contains 2 males who would be subject to poll tax - Henry and probably Jonathan. It appears to me that Elizabeth lived in different taxing district than Henry. Are Henry and Conrad Voiles the same person? It's clear that Ransom and Conrad are not the same person. He appeared in the census on 30 Jun 1839 in District 15, Roane County, Tennessee.⁶⁰³ R. Voyles was listed as having 3 school age children in 1839. At this time, "school age" children included all children over the age of 6 and under 16 years of age. I have not be able to identify any of these school aged children. John L. Viles, born about 1826, is a possibility - he was apprenticed on the same day as the order was given to the Sheriff to pick up the five younger Voiles children to be apprenticed.

Although there is no conclusive evidence, there are at least two possibilities: (1) a Larken Voles who appeared in the 1830 Anderson County census and then vanished, never to appear on another public record that I can find anywhere; or (2) Levi Voiles who died in Anderson County in 1834, according to Anderson County Court records. This could be the same Levi Voiles who was listed on the 1830 Greene County census, as Levi disappeared from Greene County after the census.
