Note - living next to Jacob and Barbary Viles Snider. She was also known as Sydna VOILES. Papers filed in William's Civil War pension file indicate that he was not a Viles or Voiles, but an Arons. His wife stated that his grandmother had married a man named Voiles or Viles when William was very young, and the grandmother's husband raised him. She also stated that he used the name Voiles/Viles when in Tennessee, but used his father's surname, Arens, when in North Carolina, and that he enlisted in the army in Cherokee County, North Carolina. She further stated that his father was from North Carolina.
I didn't give this story much credence until I found William and his family living in Cherokee County, North Carolina under the Arons surname in 1860.
Note - also living with William's family in 1860 was Sidney Viles and her illegitimate daughter, Sarah. Sidney is shown living in the household of Henry Viles in Greene County, TN in 1850. I suspect that Henry Viles is the father-figure that William's wife was referring to.

Viles; mother, Ella Wallace Viles; and a sister, Margie Viles Leever.Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth L. Viles of Knoxville; a son, Wallace L. Viles Jr. of Knoxville; granddaughters, Elizabeth Viles Schultz of Champaign, Ill.; Tammy Viles Schroeder of Virginia Beach, Va.; Tina Viles Roberts of Norfolk, Va.; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Aileen Viles McCroskey of Maryville; sister-in-law, LaHoma M. Wardup of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.A graveside Service was held Saturday at Tennessee Valley Memory Gardens. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. .

He lived in District 4, Greene County, Tennessee between 1849 and 1858.⁶⁴⁰ He appeared in the census on 17 Oct 1850 in Subdivision 10, Greene County, Tennessee.⁶⁴¹ He died on 15 Jan 1885.⁶⁴² Papers filed in William's Civil War pension file indicate that he was not a Viles or Voiles, but an Arons. His wife stated that his grandmother had married a man named Voiles or Viles when William was very young, and the grandmother's husband raised him. She also stated that he used the name Voiles/Viles when in Tennessee, but used his father's surname, Arens, when in North Carolina, and that he enlisted in the army in Cherokee County, North Carolina. She further stated that his father was from North Carolina. I didn't give this story much credence until I found William and his family living in Cherokee County, North Carolina under the Arons surname in 1860.
Quoting directly from an Affidavit filed by David Voils, son of William Voiles, on May 14, 1893: "... as to his proper name fathers Grandmother first married an Arens and he died she then married a Voiles after her second marriage the children was called Voiles and after we moved to Tenn we were always called Voiles before in N. Carolina we was known as or by the name Arens."
Quoting an Affidavit made by Eva Voiles dated June 12, 1893: "William Voiles gramother was twist maried her first husband was Arens and William Voils was a son of him she afterwards while William Voiles was young she married a man by the name of Voiles which he assumed ... William Arens ... was most commonly in Tennessee known as or by the name of Voiles in North Carolina he was known as Arens by his fathers name."
Note - also living with William's family in 1860 was Sidney Viles and her illegitimate daughter, Sarah. Sidney is shown living in the household of Henry Viles in Greene County, TN in 1850. I suspect that Henry Viles is the father-figure that William's wife was referring to, and this report has been prepared in accordance with that belief. William's possible siblings, either half or step, include Barbara (born about 1828), Phillip (born about 1830), Sidney (born about 1834) and George (born about 1840). Sidney is back living in Greene County in 1870, after marrying Adam Snider, and she is living next to Barbara Viles Snider in 1880 in Greene County. In 1870, Barbara Viles Snider and Phillip Viles are living next to each other in Jefferson County. In 1850, Barbara is living one house away from Henry Viles in Greene County. Phillip Viles is in Roane County in 1860 and Greene County, Illinois in 1880; I have not found him in 1850.
Henry Viles first appears in Greene County TN in 1821, when he witnessed a deed for Robert C. Gordon and Daniel Brien, both of Greene County. The deed conveyed 170 acres on Lick Creek. Other witnesses were Noah Gillett (who married Elizabeth Voyles in 1818), Henry Gamon and Elijah Carver. Henry appears on the first available tax list after 1817, the tax list of 1828, along with subsequent tax lists, the 1830 census, the 1840 census and the 1850 census. Henry appears to live in the same tax district that William Viles first appeared in 1849. Henry was born about 1795 in South Carolina. Parents: Unknown ARONS.
