The Passing of John Marion Voiles, 81 years of age, a highly respected citizen of Texas county since 1906, occurred at the family home in Guymon last Friday, May 28, following an illness of several years. The deceased with a twin brother, William, was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. William and a younger brother, Marshall, preceded him in death.
Mr. Voiles was married to Miss Addie Bridgewater, who survives him, in Bridgewater, Illinois, in 1884. Their children are Mrs. Maude Wall, of Guymon; Mrs. C.E. Wilson and Clifford B. Voiles of Hooker; and Mrs. W.D. Hudson, Jr., of Big Lake, Texas. There are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The Voiles homestead, to which we moved his family in 1907, and retired from in 1929, when he moved to Guymon, is seven miles west of Eva. On May 28, 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Voiles celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

He died on 15 Sep 1885 in , Greene County, Illinois.702,703 He was buried in Bridgewater Cemetary, Greene County, Illinois.702,703 According to Gerald Caulk's notes: "Phillip and Charity, along with sons, Marshall, and twins John & Bill, are alleged to have walked from Greene County, TN (Greenville), all the way to Greene County, Illinois. They probably had wagons for the transport of possessions, or, divided one with others. Charity once tried to drown herself in a river, was pulled out and saved. She died in an institution, under care. Family tradition says she was half Cherokee."
My son, a descendant of Phillip Voiles, has participated in the Voiles/Viles/Voyles DNA Surname Study. He matched none of the other participants, but did match two lines of Arons coming out of South Carolina 36 for 37 markers. This is a very strong match, and in light of the DNA evidence, along with other circumstantial evidence, I have concluded that Phillip and William Viles, born 1828 and died 1885, were most likely brothers. Barbara Viles (born about 1825), Sidney Viles (born about 1834) and George Viles (born about 1840) were likely either siblings or half siblings to William and Philip. The evidence includes oral family history that Philip Voiles was born in Greene County, TN; census evidence that Philip Voiles was living next to Barbara Viles Snyder in 1870 in Jefferson County, TN and Barbara Viles was probably raised by Henry Viles; evidence from the Civil War Pension file that William Viles was actually born an Arons, but took the Viles surname after being raised from a young child by a man named Viles; and William Viles and his family, including Sidney Viles, who resided with Henry Viles in the 1850 census, were living in North Carolina in 1860 using the Arons surname.
