Title: La Vie en Rose (Life in Rose-Color)
Media: Mixed media on paper
La Vie en Rose is a piece I tore from a recent page of my drawing and text diary, which I keep working on for years. I chose it for the calendar, because it has the symbols of the three still leading and still conflicting monotheist religions. They are drawn repeatedly, one on top of the other like players/actors waiting in their spits to start the game/play. The word “life” in two languages below attempts to serve as a reminder, a sign, for my preferred possibility for this play. The red/rose color in the background is also a reminder but of both possibilities, the rose color of life or the blood of war. Obviously it’s all very childish, naïve and fragile looking, but it’s there, drawn and written, attempting to win against all odds.
I have been an artist my whole life, working in all mediums, mainly painting and drawing. In recent years my art has become symbolic and political, influenced by my political awareness and activism in feminist peace and demilitarization movements in Israel and the Middle East. I was born and raised in Israel to parents who were Holocaust survivors and have lived in the US during different periods of my life. Since 2005 I have lived in Palo Alto, CA. My art has been exhibited in group and solo shows in Israel, US, and Europe. I was the founder and director of a feminist/political artists’ gallery in Israel, where I exhibited my own art and curated numerous exhibitions for other artists. In addition, I organized artistic and political events. I studied fine arts, design and film in art schools in NYC and Israel. In NYC I studied at the Art Students’ League, FIT, New School and Young Filmmakers. I received an MA in Contemporary Art from Liverpool University in England which included museum studies with the Tate Gallery. Throughout my adult life I have taught art in my studio to students of all ages. I view my art as a tool for internal reconciliation, hoping to help bring about a possibility for well-needed political reconciliation.
