Title: peace dove
Media: tapestry woven of mohair, linen, perle cotton, sea silk, waxed linen, glass bead

The design was adapted from a little pin that was my mother’s and then mine…we both wore it on our nursing school uniforms.  For some reason, when I heard about the Countdown to Peace Project, I immediately knew I wanted to weave this image even though I haven’t worn the pin in many years.  I made a scanned image of the pin, enlarged it, and wove this part of the pin, interpreting it in color.  Although tapestry is often woven using only one type of weft material, I wanted to use many different types to give this small piece more visual texture.  Just like our world, diversity makes it more interesting.

In 2005, I retired from my career as a labor & delivery/perinatal research nurse in order to study and pursue tapestry weaving full time.  In early summer 2007, construction of my home studio in Arizona was completed.  With my tapestry designs, I strive to reflect my deep connections with and love for the southwestern desert and mountain environments where I live and spend my time, manifesting my passion for the unique flora, fauna, colors, forms, and culture of these lands.  It is my hope that this passion will resonate with all who view the tapestries and serve as a reminder of how unique our desert ecosystem is for those who know and love it, or reveal its beauty to those who do not.
