A Grateful Nation Salutes

Jim Wills, W5JIM

for services above and beyond the

call of duty. An ordinary person

who has had an extraordinary life

Jim recognizes that GOD spoke the world

into existence and hung it on nothing.

He also recognizes that JESUS is the

MESSIAH, the SAVIOR of the world and that

HIS dying on the cross and shedding HIS

precious blood and rising again is our only hope of

salvation. So, put your trust in HIM for

forgiveness of your sins.

***********************************************************

In his old age Jim has decided to make

this homepage to aggrandize himself. Ha!

So please enjoy it with a humorous

attitude of an old man in his dotage.

Jim age seven

It was a time when ordinary men did

extraordinary things. Uncommon valor

was a common virtue.

Jim and sister age two

Milk Wagon

In 1946, Jim and Sam Lovin served

6 months in the Texas State Guard

before it was disbanded. He was 14

years old. Later, at age 16, he

served 2 years in the Texas National

Guard before going active in the

Navy the week he turned 18.

Sam Lovin, T.H. Payne, Devon Chamness

and Jim were to meet at the recruiting

station and all join the Navy together.

Leon Foster had already enrolled at Texas

A & M. Sam had a motorcycle wreck on his

way down and broke his shoulder, so he

couldn't go. Devon was too young, so he

couldn't go. That left T. H. and Jim to

go on alone. They met Ken Weaver at the

receiving station in Dallas and the

three maintained a life long friendship

with each other.

Ken Jim T.H.

Because of his previous military knowledge

Jim was made Recruit Company Commander.

He turned down an appointment to

Annapolis while in navy boot camp in

January 1951 to serve two back-to-back

combat tours with the U.S.Navy as a

telegrapher in the Korean War,

first on the USS Lowry DD-770 and then

the USS Trathen DD-530. If he had accepted

the appointment TO ANNAPOLIS he may have retired as

an Admiral instead of a Master Sergeant.

It Seems he was interested more in

medals than an education.

Was this dumb or what?

USS Lowry

USS Trathen

Jim said he would always be grateful to

Bob Mayo for extracting him from the deck

force and making a telegrapher out of him.

Bob is a great guy and they are in email/

phone contact all these years later.

Bob went on to retire from the FAA as

Plans & Procedures Officer for the FAA

Northwest Regional Headquarters.

***********************************************************

Jim participated in four major battle

campaigns K7, K8, K9, and K10. Later,

when Jim needed his combat records, the

Navy could not produce them, however,

Congressman Hall and Martha Glover

located them at the National

Security Agency. (NSA) It is pretty

tough going when the Chinese are

shooting at you from the North, and

the U.S. Marines are shooting at you

from the South, and you're in a

minefield with only a radio on your

back and no weapon. What a way to

fight a war!!!

Jim made two round-the-world cruises,

visiting 26 countries.

For a time, he volunteered to serve on

a South Korean PT boat cruising the

Chimnampo River at night near Pyongyang

in North Korea above the 38th parallel.

to prevent an invasion of the Chinese

from the North.

During the daytime the PT boat would

hide behind Soc-To Island

Later, he joined the Air Force. After

Russian language School and Gunnery

school, he flew on B-25s, B-50s, and

B-66s as a defensive systems operator.

His first Aircraft Commander was

Rex Deaton, a highly decorated pilot

from Henderson, Texas, he is the

finest pilot the Air Force ever

produced, a great guy and

life long friend. Rex and Jim

are in email/phone contact

all these years later.

Jim (the tall one) and crew 1957 Record setting flight

Coast to Coast in 3 hours 27 minutes

***********************************************************

In 1961 Jim joined the Strategic Air

Command And flew thousands of hours

on hundreds of SAC airborne alert

missions on B-52Ds and B52Gs as a

DCSO during the Cold War. During

these 24/25 hour missions around the

borders of Russia, Jim flew with a

cyanide tablet in his possession. If

shot down he was not to be captured

alive. He knew to much. Do Americans

know what its servicemen and women

have done for it to preserve its

freedom? Maybe not. If it did, Jim

doesn't think they would be dividing

themselves into one group or another

and complaining all the time, but

instead stand as one nation

under GOD, undivided, one flag, one language,

MIG aircraft were his constant escorts.

His crew was to deliver the first

American response (H-Bombs) to a

military attack on the United States

On the G model B52, he would

relieve one of the pilots so he

could rest and Jim would fly the plane

along with the other pilot.

Just as SIR Winston Churchill

said of the heroic airmen who fought

in the Battle of Britain,

"Never in the field of human conflict

have so many, owed so much, to so few."

***********************************************************

Since Jim spends so much time in the

hospital these days, he has come to

know his favorite nurse of all time.

Angela Gilley Marant, an Angel of Mercy.

HAM RADIO

Jim became a ham in 1962 after returning

from Japan. His first call was WA5EHQ,

then N5HCT. He called on his knowledge

of telegraphy to upgrade his license to

Extra Class Operator in 1986, and was

dismayed to learn that the Extra Class

priviledges no longer entitled him to a

call sign of choice, so he petitioned

the FCC to restore the call sign of

choice that had previously been

accorded Extra Class operators.

The FCC cited shortages of manpower

and funds so with constant

communications between Jim and the FCC

over the next four years, the FCC

refused to respond favorably, so in

1990 he contacted Congressman Ralph

Hall, who sits on the Telecommunication

Sub-Committee, and explained that hams

would pay a reasonable administrative

fee for a call sign of choice. Jim

succeeded in getting one line added to

the 1993 Federal Omnibus Budget

Recollection Act. It took

a total of 7 years, but on

Tuesday, August 10, 1993 the President

signed legislation authorizing the FCC

to collect a fee for issuance of a

specially selected call sign It took

the FCC another three years to comply,

but in November 1996, Jim finally

received W5JIM as his primary station

license (A 10 year quest).

W5YI has written about Jim's feat in his

"W5YI Report" and several Ham

Radio Magazines.

Congressman Hall said, "We have never

had anyone bring us a problem before,

show us how to fix it, and then show

us how to pay for it."

STUFF

Jim holds a Bachelor of Science Degree

in Business Management from LeTourneau

University. He was Chief Instructor

at the Air Force Computer School,

Later, while commanding a Mobile

Traning Detachment in Austin, Texas

teaching the Univac 1219B he was

Director of Durham's Electronic

had a contract with the VA to

teach math, all while on active

duty in Air Training Command.

***********************************************************

In 1971 Bud Lambert a VIP at the Singer

Company's Computer Division hired Jim

away from the Air Force.

***********************************************************

In 1976 Sears-Roebuck gave Jim a

franchise as a reward for finding and

fixing a $5,000,000 error in their

software at their Lake Charles

Louisiana Store. He was the

Advanced Systems Manager of the Singer

Company's Computer Division in Houston

at the time. He took advantage of the

offer and opened the franchise in

Marble Falls, Texas, a beautiful small

town nestled in the hill country on

the Colorado River 50 miles Northwest

of Austin, Texas

***********************************************************

After his 2nd retirement, he was

Director of The

Southwest School of Electronics

in Austin, Texas. In 1989, Jim had a

bout with TIAs and moved back to Tyler

to die. He didn't die and sure was

disappointed. Ha! He then taught

electronic and computer courses

at Tyler Junior College. Jim Gill

a fellow instructor at Tyler Junior

College is now President of the

Korean War Veterans Associaion of

which Jim is a member.

***********************************************************

After his third retirement he became

a business consultant for three years

Jim was offered a seat on the board of

Moller Aircraft, but he and the inventer

could never agree on territory.

(The prototype was powered by six 100 hp

engines each measuring one foot cube).

So Jim did not invest in the company

Mistake? Maybe! Time will tell.

PUBLIC SERVICE

He has held many public service positions

serving the communities where he lived.

He was elected to the Charter Commission

and helped write the City Charter when

Marble Falls went to home rule. He also

served on the Water & Sewer Commission

for years.

He founded the Highland Lakes Educational

Development Society with two Ph.Ds and the

High School Principal after House Bill 72

was passed by the Texas Legislature

with Central Texas College in Killeen.

(Every other college wanted a tax base.

but Jim talked Central Texas College

into waiving that.) This allowed

graduated Juniors to take College courses

and receive dual credit from the High

school and the College. Jackie and Jim

even picked up 18 hours under this program.

"WILLIAM GUINETTE WILLS

Tyler, Texas

William G. Wills, 62, farmer, helped to

rescue Thomas Ashcraft 17, farmhand,

from a well cave in, Tyler, Texas,

April 16,1912. Thomas was working in

the well 65 feet deep when a large

quantity of sand caved from the

top, carrying with it a curb made of

boards eight feet long. Some of the

boards broke, and others stuck with

their ends buried in the sand. Thomas

was partly covered by sand and was

unable to free himself. After three

sons of Wills and the owner of the

well had refused to enter the well,

Wills said he would go. His sons and

daughters begged him not to go, but

he had himself lowered in darkness.

He sat astride a stick at the end of

the well rope and was tied to

the rope. Wills grasped the ends of

two boards and as those above slowly

hoisted him, pulled them from the

sand and carried them to the surface.

During a period of an hour and 30

minutes he made seven trips to the

surface with boards, and during that

time no one in the crowd that

gathered would consent to relieve

him. When Wills became too tired to

continue his efforts, another man

agreed to enter the well to remove

the sand. He worked in the well 40

minutes, and then a second man went

down and worked a few minutes. As no

one else would go, Wills went again,

and later, after the first man had

again worked in the well, Wills made

another descent simply to examine

Thomas. A third man completed the

work. When Thomas was hoisted to the

surface, he was found to be uninjured.

He had not been unconscious at any

time while in the well. The following

morning when a slight pressure was

applied, a large quantity of sand

slipped into the well.

Can You Believe It?

In 1960, the Far East was in chaos. Jim was

transferred to Yokota AB, Japan to another

B66 outfit. Faye and the girls joined him a

few months later. Marsha started to school

there at age 5, as did all the Japanese kids.

She was to be in school for the next 27 years.

Jim's mission was to probe the radar capabilities

of the Russians and the Chinese to determine

just what their intercept ranges and patterns

were. His crew would

fly along these Russian, Korean and Chinese coasts

and when they would launch their fighters,

Jim's crew would turn away.

Often their fighters would

come up and fly on Jim's wing till they were no

longer a threat to them. They were very

careful not to get into Jim's attack zone because

He would bring his guns to bear and shoot them

down. Neither they nor Jim wanted to be the one

to fire the first shot of World War III. One

night he came home from a long mission and after

debriefing, stopped by the club and had a few

beers with the crew. It was typical of him in

those days. When he got home the family had

supper and went to bed to stay warm. It was

wintertime in Japan and his house was very

cold since there was no insulation in it.

During the night, He heard a strong commanding;

yet soft voice call his name. He thought there

was a base alert and someone was outside

calling his name. At that moment the room

was filled with the most brilliant, warm,

comforting, forgiving, peaceful light he has

ever experienced. The room warmed immediately.

He sat up in the bed. The light was brighter

than the sun. It was so brilliant that he

could not understand how he could look

directly into it. A voice from the light

said, "Jim, if you don't straighten up your

life, I'm going to take the girls away

from you." Whoa! he knew he was in the

presence of God! He pleaded, "Please GOD,

I love them too much. From this day forward,

I dedicate their lives and mine to your service

and glorification." The light withdrew,

leaving Jim wide-awake and puzzled. The

room returned to the cold temperature that

it was before. He didn't think that GOD

visited us anymore. GOD himself, WOW!

It was the God of the universe, the GOD WHO

spoke the world into existence and hung it

on nothing, talking directly to him. After

that he got to know Frank and Ester Plazek,

missionaries in the area and started going

to church again. He helped build a small

church not far from the base and just a

block from their house. they called

it the Church of the Open Door. The men

would take turns preaching. Finally, when

they thought they could afford it, they sent

to Bob Jones University for a pastor. He and

his family finally came and moved in next

door to Jim. He and Jim would ride Jim's

Lambretta scooter up into the interior of

Japan and visit with the Japanese farmers

about CHRIST. They passed out tracts to all

who would take one.

***********************************************************

In 2006 Jim had a stint put in a main heart

vessel and two days later while recovering

at home, he decided to get out of bed and

go to the den. He started passing out in

the hallway, but at that moment a strong arm

grabbed his elbow and another his shoulder

and lifted him to his feet. Jim turned to

see who was helping him as he thought he was

the only on in that end of the house. He

found no one there, that he see that is.

There was someone there allright

it had to be his Guardian Angel watching over

him. Jim shares these experiences reluctantly

with only those he trusts because clerics,

scholars and idiots scoff at such tales.

It happened to Jim and changed his

life forever.
