Jonkonnu 2004 - Dec. 18th

Staged outside the main entrance to the Tryon Palace, costumed singers, dancers & musicians recreated Jonkonnu, an African-American yuletide tradition unique to Eastern NC. The festive performers brought to life a 19th century blend of African, Caribbean and English music, dance & song.  While pictures alone cannot capture the rhythmic beat of the drums or the responsorial chants and songs, they can provide a visual flavor of this holiday tradition.
