email from Kitty Humphries 8/30/03:

Yes, both marriages of Phillip Benjamin Carrawan are recorded in this register. Philip B. Carawan

applied for license to marry Anmariah Carrowan on 13 Sept 1855. They were married by Seth B. Harris,

JP on Sept 16, 1855. The Sept 16 could possibly be a 13.  Philip Benjamin Carrowon applied for license

to marry Marthy Gines (sic) on Jan 20, 1860. Philip Benjamin Carrowan and Martha Giles were married

on 31 Jan 1860 by Reuben Benson, JP.

According to Billy Gene Carawan, supposedly buried behind the house where Billy and Mary O'Neal

Spencer lived in Rose Bay.  The gravesite has long since been plowed over by Alva and David O'Neal.

Philip married1  (1) Ann Mariah CARAWAN  daughter of (William?) Benjamin CARAWAN and Delilah WHITE on 13 Sep 1855. Ann was born about 1837. She died before 1860.

It is unknown whether the Ann Mariah Carawan who married Philip Benjamin Carawan is the same as

the Ann Mariah who was the d/o Benjamin Carawan and Delilah White.  However, nothing is known of

the d/o Benjamin and Delilah besides a rough birthdate, and not much is known of the first wife of Philip

except that she died young.  I am operation on the assumption that they are indeed the same person, not

because of the evidence, but for the lack thereof.  There was a good deal of cross-county travel between

these two parts of the state, and while I am far from certain of this, it does seem entirely reasonable.

Philip and Ann had the following children:

               2 M        i.  James CARAWAN  was born2  about 1855 in North Carolina. He died3  after 1870.

Philip married4  (2) Martha GILES  daughter of William W. GILES and Sally BERRY on 31 Jan 1860. Martha was born5  about 1840. She died on 6 Sep 1897.

email from Kitty Humphries 8/30/03:

This might be of interest.  I just found this short notice that could be Martha Giles Carawan Bell. In the

book Marriages and Deaths from Washington, NC Newpapers Vol. 3 The Washington Progress 1887-

1906 compiled by Esther and Jim Chauncey, edited and indexed by Sybble Smithwick and John H.

OdenIII and published by Beaufort Co. Gen. Soc in 2002.   Abstracted from microfilm at archives.

On p. 92. of the above book ---  Wed. Sept 15, 1897, p. 3,  col.. 4, Died; From Lake Forest; The funeral

services of Mrs. Martha Bell, who died on the 6th inst., was conducted by Rev. W. R. Carawan.

NOTE:  I am taking the above as truth for the moment and entering a death date for Martha.  This obit

will have to be checked further though.

There is a Martha Bell on the 1890 tax list who owns 51 Acres in Rose Bay, Swan Quarter twp.  No age

given, listed as white.  Value: 275 Stock: 4 Total: 2.51.

Philip and Martha had the following children:

               3 F         ii.  Sophia CARAWAN  was born6  about 1861. She died7  before 1890.

Elizabeth Andrew states Sophia died before 1890.  She was for sure dead before 1897,

as she is not referenced in P.B. Carawan's estate records of that year, but Lorenzo

Williams is.

Sophia married Lorenzo W. "Rensey" WILLIAMS  son of Samuel L. WILLIAMS and Mordissa SAWYER on 2 Nov 1882. Lorenzo was born on 29 Oct 1859. He died on 24 Dec 1936 in Hyde Co. NC. He was buried in Mt.

Olive Church Cemetery, US 264, Currituck twp, Hyde Co. NC.

Killed by being struck by a car driven by Charlie Armstrong.  Named after his father's

uncle, Lorenzo Dow Williams.

listed as "William" on 1870 census, age 13.

Mr. Rendsey WILLIAMS was accidentally killed on December 24, 1936, when he was

struck by an automobile driven by Mr. Charlie ARMSTRONG. Mr. Williams was 77

years old and very feeble and it was thought that he started across the road and

couldn't stop and ran into the car. He was born on October 27, 1859. Services were

conducted by Rev. R.L. HARRIS. Burial took place at Mt. Olive Church. There survives

him, one son, Sam WILLIAMS of Swan Quarter; one daughter, Mrs. Jennings

SPENCER of Swan Quarter; one brother, Mr. Lonnie WILLIAMS; two sisters: Mrs.

Mattie Cohoon of Kilkeney and Mrs. Elisha SEWELLS, all of Swan Quarter. [IMO

states Lorenzo W. "Rensey" WILLIAMS was born October 29, 1859 and died

December 24, 1936. He was the son of Samuel L. WILLIAMS and Mordicia SAWYER.

Many sources state that Ben Calvin had a first wife named Susan ??.  However, no

evidence whatsoever exists to support this, and I believe someone is confusing Calvin

with Cora's father Richard Benjamin Carawan who married Susan Jane Midyette.

from Hyde Co. Messenger, Sep 1933:

On the morning of July 17, 1933, friends and relatives of Captain Billy SPENCER were greatly shocked

by his sudden death. He was found dead in bed. He was in good health seemingly but God saw fit to call

him at this unexpected moment. Captain Billy, as he was known throughout his community and county,

was born and reared in Hyde and spent most of his life at Rose Bay where his home was at the time of

his death. For a number of years he operated a freight boat from Rose Bay to Washington, N.C. The

latter part of his life he spent at home engaged in the mercantile business, farming and logging. The

funeral service was conducted from his home by the Methodist pastor, Rev. W.G. LOWE, assisted by

Rev. Roe HARRIS. He was buried in the BRIDGMAN graveyard. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie

SPENCER; one daughter and five sons: Mrs. Lillian SHEPPARD, Macon SPENCER and Walter

SPENCER, all of Swan Quarter, Billy SPENCER of Scranton, John SPENCER and Charlie SPENCER of

Rocky Mount. His death is also mourned by six sisters, two brothers and three grandchildren.

Mother of Year gets friendly roast

By BILL SANDIFER Staff Writer

FAIRFIELD -- Sandra Carawan had a Greenville shopping trip cut short by a couple of playful daughters

who told her they had to be back home by 5:00.

She didn't know she was being set up.

When her husband and the Daily News reporter walked in, she was starting to smell a rat.

That rat, however, turned out to be more of a mink when she was told she had been chosen the Daily

News Mother of the Year for 2003.

Daughters Diana Williams and Debbie Daughtry broke into happy, loving smiles as Carawan realized

why her shopping had been curtailed.

Husband Mack Carawan beamed.

"And the best thing," said granddaughter Miranda Daughtry, "is you get your picture in the paper."

While Sandra Carawan clearly appreciated the recognition, it quickly became apparent that the love and

dedication that has forged this close-knit family was, indeed, the best reward.

"Nobody can be more blessed than we've been with our children," said Carawan.

The Carawans' two other children, Joan Maxwell and Willie Mack Carawan Jr., were unable to be at the

event.

One of the hallmarks of a happy childhood is being blissfully unaware of the problems of the world. By

that benchmark, Carawan provided amply for her children.

"We were poor but didn't know it," observed Williams. "Nobody told us we were poor."

Carawan's can-do attitude and tireless dedication to family and friends filled in what could have been

rough spots.

Williams spoke of climbing in the family car -- it didn't have a radio -- and singing wherever they went.

"We sang mostly church songs," she said.

After she reached adulthood, Williams said a brother and two sisters who were about her age came to

sing at her church. When the service ended, Williams met them and said, "'So y'all didn't have a radio in

your car either?'" She explained the remark, and they all laughed.

To keep her children clothed and presentable, Carawan became an expert seamstress, providing

remarkable clothing tailored to their builds. She even tailored a leisure suit for her husband -- it's still in

the attic.

"It was perfect when she got through with it," said Mack Carawan of all her sewing.

Sandra Carawan said she's grateful that the popular fashion, when it came time to make prom dresses,

was "country-style" and "peasant dresses." That eased material and fitting needs considerably, she

noted. With four kids, she said, "You learn to sew in a hurry."

"You do what you have to do," said Carawan. "Somebody said, 'You're smart.' I said, 'No, I'm poor.'"

Although times are better financially, Carawan is still a thrifty shopper.

"She can wear anything from an 8 to an 18," observed Daughtry. "If the price is good," began Carawan. "

She'll take it up," finished Williams.

In the loving roast that Carawan received as part of her recognition, probably the largest number of

remarks recalled her passion for feeding the multitudes on Thanksgiving.

"We've actually been to Thanksgiving lunch and sat beside people we never met before," recalled

Williams. "Mama would say this is such and such."

Invited guests occasionally would surpass the 30 mark, requiring that the house be abandoned and a

building rented to accommodate the meal.

"Thanksgiving is a big deal," said Williams, "because she's thankful for so many things."

"She's been likened to the Statue of Liberty," began Williams. "Give us your tired, your poor, your hungry,

" finished a smiling Carawan.

The family members broke into laughter.

A sense of humor, says Carawan, is essential for getting through life.

Although the whole family has ready smiles, the siblings noted that Mom was no pushover.

"If she told you you were going to get a spanking when you got home," recalled Williams, "you'd pray all

the way home that she'd forget."

"I never said, 'Wait till your daddy gets home,'" explained Carawan. "I'd spank 'em."

Sometimes discipline took the form of chores.

Williams and Daughtry recalled being assigned to a month of dishwashing. They'd prop a hymnal up in

the kitchen window and sing while they washed.

"We knew we had to do it," said Williams, "so we thought we might as well have fun while we do it."

Daughtry added wryly, "And don't think a broken hand got you out of it." She said her slowed pace

required two months to work off the one-month sentence.

Smiling, Carawan added, "You see, they all turned out good."

That would be hard to argue with.

Williams is a school teacher; Daughtry and her husband farm; Maxwell and her husband own and

manage the very successful Regulator Marine boat manufacturing company in Edenton; and Willie Mack

Carawan Jr. is chairman of the Hyde County Board of Commissioners.

Williams summed up the best gift Carawan had bestowed upon her children as the "pioneering spirit."

In her nomination letter to the Daily News, Williams describes that spirit as "the part of us that pushes us

to strive harder. It is the never say never part of us that keeps us working and pushing to reach our goal."

And that is pretty high praise for Sandra Carawan, the Daily News Mother of the Year for 2003.
