Marty's Corvette Page up dated March 2004 Hello I'm Marty AKA 2Tanka. I'm from Pennsylvania. Now stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB NC where I work AMMO! I.Y.A. Y.A.S!!!First let me tell you a little story about my nick name. My first shore dive (EVER) in Guam I suit up with my steel 95 and aluminum 30 pony bottle (can't ever have too much air). Everyone is looking at me a little funny. They never saw anyone dive with a pony bottle before. I soon find out why. We do the long walk to the shore. First you should not dive with a heavy steel tank and a 30cu pony bottle. Between the heavy tanks, the strong surf, and the sharp and slippery Guam coral reef it was not a good combination. To anyone who ever did a shore dive over sharp coral reef fighting the surf, you probably can image what happened next. Well... just let me tell you I never tried that again. So that is why they call me 2Tanka. I'm a NAUI Dive Master with just over 500 dives. I was certified back in 1991 while I was stationed at Clark AB Philippines. I also received my Advance certification there. After MT. Pinatubo blew back in 92. I was evacuated from the Philippinies to Guam For two days. The picture to the right is a color photo taken the day after the eruption, June 14th 1992. Then I was on my way to my next duty station Langley AFB VA. There I met up with then LT. COL. Robb (now retired) who was the president of the RIVER RATS a local dive club, Pete, Ron (an old friend from Korea) Jeff, and Joe who is now teaching in the Air Force Academy. There I did off shore dives in VA (very cold). Then we went south several times a year to Cape Hatteress NC (The Grave yard of the Atlantic) Where the water and visibility was much better. The more we went south the less I dove in Virginia. While I was in Virginia I was sent to Homestead to help clean up after hurricane Andrew. While there I received my rescue diver training. Shortly after returning to Virginia Robb asked to become a Asst. Instructor. About 1 month later I received orders to Guam. That is when I asked him to train me as a Divemaster. While in Guam I met several very close friends. JT & Jo, Smithy, Jim, (another) Jim (and later on His wife Nancy and children Paul and Tiffiny), Buck & Toni , Vince and Willie. Also some non diver friends, Tim & Margaret, Randy & Shiela, Mark, Dave & Michelle, Lyle & Sharon, just to name a few. One of the first persons I met there was Jim Greiner (a nondiver at that time). Jim went with us many times to just snorkel and "truck watch". After too many (I guess) truck watches Jim finally got certified. Shortly after His wife Nancy came from the states and soon got certified. In March 96 I made plans with Smity and Jim #1 to go to Truk Lagoon. It was a seven day live aboard the USS Throfinn. There I did 25 dives. It was a very tiring time, but It was the most fantastic wreck diving I ever did! A year later in July I hooked up with a local dive shop called MDA (Micronesia Divers Association). We went to Palau and Yap. In Palau we dove with every thing you could ever imagination, from sharks to turtles. The water there was clear and the current strong. The reef was just so incredible that it was hard to believe. In December of 96 I came to Seymour Johnson AFB NC. Where I'm back diving the Graveyard of the Atlantic. In the summer the water temp is surprisingly good for the East coast. In Jun. of 98 I'm planning on diving with the Virgina River Rats on Blackbeards cruises. My next plans are to go back to Guam and take a trip to Bikini Atol, To dive some if not the best wrecks in the world. All photos were taken by me with a Sea & Sea Motormarine II and a strobe. Here is a picture of my girlfriend Gayle and my new truck.
