BRIEF HISTORY OF WFWS

The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies encourages and recognizes artistic excellence through competitions and encourages the visibility of watercolor as an artistic medium through annual exhibitions. WFWS was founded in 1974 by the New Mexico Watercolor Society through the foresight and work of Dr. David Gale (1915-1980). Today WFWS includes over 5000 artists in ten regional societies.

WFWS sponsors an annual juried exhibition that is hosted by a regional member society. The WFWS exhibitions have works on paper, including paper collage, were created with a variety of water-based media: casein, gouache, tempera, acrylic and transparent or opaque watercolors. A diversity of artistic expression is the result.

Membership in WFWS is automatic for any artist who is a member of the these regional societies; Arizona Watercolor Association Colorado Watercolor Society Nevada Watercolor Society New Mexico Watercolor Society San Antonio Watercolor Group Ð Dropped out of WFWS in 2004 San Diego Watercolor Society Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild Southwestern Watercolor Society Utah Watercolor Society Watercolor Art Society-Houston West Texas Watercolor Society.

WHY ENTER A WFWS SHOW ?

Wouldn’t you feel great by having your work recognized and displayed in a prominent National Watercolor Show?  Many of us don’t enter the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies' Exhibitions because we feel we won’t get in.  Well, by not entering, you are guaranteeing you won’t get in.  How about giving your work a chance? If you have a painting you are truly pleased with, that shows your emotional connection with the subject and/or the passion you feel, try entering it.  You might be surprised.

If you have any questions about entering a WFWS show, please contact  Gale Webb (798-0773 or galewebb@aol.com) or Carol Peterson (799-6531 or carolpeterson@suddenlink.net).
