What can $4 do?

The latest issue of the Postal Worker lists WV as having collected far less toward COPA than our goal.  Please make a contribution today.  Payroll deductions of $4.00 per pay period, with our rate of pay, won’t kill any of us.  The latest report of COPA contributions lists WV MALs as having contributed zero.  There are more than a hundred MALs.  At $4.00 per pay period, with 26 pays, that’s $104.  If each MAL contributed just $4.00 per pay period through automatic deductions, the COPA coffers would increase by more than $10,000 per year.  If each dues paying member in the state of WV alone contributed just $4.00 per pay period, with just over 1200 members, the state would raise its contributions to a whopping $125,000.00, finally putting WV on the National map of recognized states.

2012 Postal Labor Unions Summer School

The West Virginia Postal Workers Union is an avid participant in the PLUSS program and awards two scholarships to attend PLUSS each year.  They are the Dorothy Meadows and Cecil F. Romine scholarships.  Selections are made annually at State Convention.  In addition, the Institute for Labor Studies and Research, who sponsors our summer school through WVU, affords one scholarship in the form of a rebate so that the recipient’s Local can send someone the following year at no cost.  The recipients chosen for the WVPWU scholarships to attend PLUSS 2011 were Tina Carey of the KYOWVA Area Local and Kathryn Davis of the Eastern Panhandle Area local.  To see more about PLUSS 2012, please click the link at the top left of this page.   Check back often for these and other updates.

District EAP Advisory Committees (DAC) around the country will be providing special outreach to our employees during April to increase everyone’s awareness of what the EAP has to offer. Here are a few points for you to remember:

EAP is Free of Charge

There is no charge to employees or family members who receive counseling and other services provided directly by the EAP. If additional, outside professional services are needed, the EAP will work with you to identify the best available treatment services covered by your insurance plan and in line with your individual finances.

EAP is Confidential

Your privacy is protected by strict federal and state confidentiality laws and regulations and by professional ethical standards for counselors. Your information may not be released to anyone without your prior written consent, except as required by law. FOR THE VETERANS

Human Relations Director, Sue Carney, sent a letter to the local and state presidents with regard to the 2011 VA Stand Downs that occur throughout the country during various times of the year.  She is asking participation in the APWU VA Stand Down by having your organization make a donation of at least one filled backpack and sending it to the nearest VA organization holding a Stand Down.  All food and hygiene items must be in manufacturer sealed packages.  “We owe a lifetime of gratitude to the courageous men and women who have worn our country’s uniform.”  To cover the costs, organizations can use treasury funds with membership approval or make purchases through the authority of its Constitution and By-Laws if such expenditures are authorized.  Do not send monetary donations, but local and state organizations can make contributions and collect from the membership to cover the costs.  It is estimated that one filled backpack would cost about $125 plus shipping expenses.  Suggested items are:  Flashlight with change of batteries; BIC lighter; first-aid kit; thermos; one set of utensils; twist-top manual can opener; antibacterial no-rinse soap; disposable razors; toothbrush; toothpaste; mouthwash; shampoo; hairbrush; baby wipes; toilet paper; pen/paper; instant heat packs; hooded poncho; survival blanket; warm socks; ski cap/mask; scarf; insulated gloves; ready-to-eat items.  “All items must be new...even gently used items will be discarded.”  For more information, please visit apwu.org’s Human Relations page.
