Much of my
imagery is hard to grasp at first, at least the
way I want them to be grasped, and that's
intentional. Whether you see what I
was really intending the first time you look at
it (or not) or the second time, or next week,
doesn't indicate success or failure to me, as
long as you see it eventually. A
perfect result for me would be eliciting a big
'Ohhhh!' when the subject matter is finally
realized by the viewer, even if it had to be
divulged by me. If I need to list
reasons why what I painted is what I'm saying it
is, then one of us doesn't know what I'm doing.
My working
titles usually would be dead give-aways, so I
often make the final title more cryptic, so the
opportunity for an "Ohhhh!" not be
lost. I have, on occasion, made
names up that aren't related to it at all, just
so I can talk about it, without really talking
about it, (mostly to myself).
I like to
explore new techniques and then experiment with
doing them wrong. (The happiest of
accidents are lucky). If a piece is
progressing nicely, (and behaving itself: doing
what I want it to, when I want it to) then I
often feel more free to let 'process' take over
and that's when really cool things sometime
happen. This is usually late
at night. Currently I
am developing ideas that provide for some
reckless abandon inspite of myself.
