Volume VI, Kodogu, Part 1 ISBN 1-888612-02-9

This is the first of the volumes on kodogu. Actually, the bulk of the book is devoted to tsuba. The first 60 pages are devoted to the early iron tsuba, starting with the Katchushi and Tosho tsuba, followed by the Onin tsuba, Heianjo Zogan, Yoshiro Zogan, Kaneie, Nobuie, Hoan, Sadahiro, Heianjo Sukashi, Kanayama, Owari Sukashi, Ko-Hagi, Tochibata, and Umetada. This is followed by 40 pages on the Shoami Ke, with discussions of the Shoami in 13 separate kuni. The rest of the iron tsuba artists follow, classified by either the Ha or the kuni. Approximately 85% of the book is devoted to iron tsuba of all types. The last part of the book opens the topic of Kinko, starting with a discussion of the types of kantei of kodogu, with a comparison of the way tsuba are viewed in the West, as opposed to the Japanese point of view. Unlike swords, there are several quite different methods of judging tsuba. A discussion in the transitions in metal engraving is followed by an introduction to the Goto generations. Next, terms related to the manufacture of kodogu are presented in quite a bit of detail. Transitions in and differentiation of shapes in Kinko kodogu are covered quite well, and conclusions are drawn related to tsuba and fuchi kashira. In doing this translation, the same program that was used to do the above-mentioned Volume IV was employed, but at this time I had a much nicer looking font. Also, all names are given in upper-case, followed by the kanji. Given the volume of names involved in kodogu, this was an enormous task. In addition to a translation of the book itself, which is 400 pages plus a 48 page frontispiece section, there is a 35 page glossary, with illustrations, and a 10 page pronunciation guide to about 900 kanji used as the first kanji in the names of swordsmiths and kodogu makers. The kanji are provided in 18 point print, so that the details are visible. These kanji were gleaned from the Nihon To Meikan and the Toso Kinko Jiten. The most noticeable difference between the two is that while the Nihon To Meikan provides the pronunciations in kana, the first edition of the Toso Kinko Jiten provides no pronunciations, and the second edition provides pronunciations for probably about 10%. In fact, the author points out that he himself has not provided any pronunciations unless he was certain of them. Basically, he pointed out that, as for the others, these were given either Kunyomi (Japanese reading), Onyomi (Chinese reading), Yuto (Japanese-Chinese), or Jubako (Chinese-Japanese) readings. As a general rule, if the Master of the group used the Onyomi (Chinese) reading, so did the students. The Goto just about all used the Onyomi. While the Japanese do not necessarily sound out the names, unfortunately, some sort of pronunciation is required to render them into the Western writing system. Since many sword collectors have not necessarily devoted a lot of time to the study of kodogu, I have included a 4 page pamhlet with a heavy cover, containing the most essential terms, so that the reader does not have to leaf back and forth through the pages. I have also included a small glossary of English to Japanese terms common to kodogu, such as metals and various artistic themes.

INDEX
PART 1

Every effort has been made to make this index as complete as possible, yet without over-indexing to the point that its usefulness is impaired. Errors tend toward redundancy, rather than omitting a subject.

When a person is listed by, for example, his family name and art name, with the art name having two possible pronunciations, he is listed under all three names, with all three included in the listing. Given names, which are not necessarily inscribed on the work, are also listed, since the author has not always made a clear statement as to whether a given name is actually used as a signature. Single names are also listed, and in this case several different people may actually be listed. While at first glance, this may seem to lead to confusion, it serves the purpose of reinforcing the fact that there are many people with the same name. Some reference works ignore this point.

Page number entries that are in bold indicate that there is a picture related to that artist or subject. Entries made in lower case indicate that a reference is made to the subject which I thought might be of more than passing interest. Because the names of some artisans and some groups are repeated so often, listing them every time they occurred would have, in my opinion, destroyed the usefulness of such listings.

I would like to point out a few items in regard to pronunciation at this time.

The particular combination HEI EI 兵 衛 usually occurs at the end of a name, and is pronounced BEI, BEE, HEI, HEE, PEI, PEE, depending on what precedes it. Sometimes it seems to be pronounced with the EE to prevent confusion with a similar sounding name which may end with a different ji, such as HEI  EE and EI sound almost alike, that is, like the English HAY or HEY, the difference being that EE does not end in a dipthong by trailing off into the sound of the Japanese I. Many of the names can be pronounced with either the EE or EI ending, and unless it was especially pointed out, most English speaking speaking people would not note the difference, at least those in America. It has been said that we have not spoken English here for years.

Another point is between T and D. In other words, you could have NOTA or NODA.

Do not let these small differences unduly annoy you, as there is no absolutely correct dogma regarding the Romanization of Japanese, especially in Japan.
