National Honor Society By-Laws

Article I: Name and Purpose

  • Section 1. The name of this chapter shall be the San Angelo Central High School Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary schools.
  • Section 2. The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of San Angelo Central High School.

Article II: Membership

  • Section 1. Membership in this chapter shall be known as active and graduate. Active members become graduate members at graduation. The graduate members have no vote.
  • Section 2. Membership in this chapter shall be based on Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.
  • Section 3. To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at San Angelo Central High School.
  • Section 4. Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be members of the junior or senior class. Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimal cumulative weighted grade point average of 96. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for selection to membership. Their eligibility shall then be considered on their service, leadership, and character.

Article III: Selection of Members

  • Section 1. The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote at the Faculty Council consisting of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter advisor shall be the sixth, non-voting, ex-officio member of the Faculty Council.
  • Section 2. Prior to the final selection, students' records and Request for Selection form shall be review to determine eligibility.

      Requirements:

    • Scholarship
      • 96 or above, grade point average (GPA will not be rounded). This is determined from the high school career average including weights.
    • Character
      • No record of expulsion, OCS, or major school violations over the current and previous two full semesters. Teacher detentions must not number more than two for minor offenses.
    • Service
      • Active in at least one service organization in school or community during the previous year. Service is defined as work performed for the good of the school or community, from which there is no visible compensation to you. Willingness to serve is an important attribute of prospective members to NHS. Service organizations include activities such as Scouts, Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Church Youth Groups ( if they are involved in service work), Key club, and Student Council.
    • Leadership
      • Participates in at least two clubs or organizations in the School or community. (Spanish Club, Band, Football Team, Cheerleaders, Youth Group , etc).
    • The same activity may not be counted for both service and leadership
    • The scholarship and character requirements must be met to qualify for membership
    • Points are assigned for service and leadership as follows:
      • Service requirement - 6 points, with 2 additional points for holding an office in the organization.
      • Leadership requirement - 3 points per organization, with 2 additional points for holding an office in any of the organizations.
    • Fifteen (15) points are required. A student may still be eligible with at least 11 points.
  • Section 3. The selection of active members shall be held once a year during the second semester of the school year.
  • Section 4. An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers from this school will be given a letter indicating the status of his/her membership and signed by the Principal.
  • Section 5. An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. This transfer member will attain within one semester and then maintain the membership requirements for this chapter in order to retain his/her membership.
