Paintings and Sketches by Dave Wallace

All of the following artwork was done when we lived in Colorado Springs in the 60's. Most of my early work was pastels of western scenes that I would frame for Christmas presents. The first paintings I ever sold were a pair of "abstracts" that were made from leftover paint slashed on a canvas to clean brushes after painting each evening. I told the Air Force Colonel who bought them how they were made and he was delighted to have a story about them but said they matched the colors he was looking for.

The following are photos taken of what I have left hanging in our home and our children's homes.

This is the largest oil painting I ever did. It was done in 1963 after we moved from New York to Colorado Springs and had bought new colonial furniture and needed a matching picture. I copied a portion of a mural by Norman Rockwell in his early days for a New Jersey tavern. What is missing from my painting is a bullet-ridden King George Tavern sign leaning against the wall on the right and more people on the left. As you know, Rockwell always told a story with his paintings. The Revolution had just occurred and a new tavern sign was needed. My painting is 3 1/2' x 2 1/2'. The original mural was around 5-6' long.

As you can see I'm not very good on originating paintings. Most my work was copying art that I liked.

Copy of  Renoir's "Two girls in a meadow"(oil) From a photo I took of an "Old Hotel" in Cripple Creek. Learned later from an attendee at the art show that it really was an old "bawdy house" discussed in a book called "Money Mountain" by Marshall Sprague (oil) This is my great-great grandfather David Franklin Wallace who was a very colorful person in Tennessee. I'm David IV and not very good at  doing portraits. (oil)

We camped at Mesa Verde CO and I made this painting from a photo I took (oil) This is an original from my imagination of the beautiful Aspen trees in Colorado (oil) The idea for this painting came from an old German pen/ink sketch called "Staying power at cards" (oil)

The following are all pastels or pen & ink
