Earth-A came about when the evil Johnny Thunder of Earth-1 gained control of the the Earth-2 Johnny Thunder's magic Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt, realizing he had fallen under the control of an evil version of his master set about sabotaging each plot the Earth-1 Thunder thought up by bringing in the JLA. Figuring out what was happening, Thunder created an alternate reality that substituted criminals into the roles of Superman, Batman, and the other male JLA members. This alternate reality was called Earth-A. Fortunately, it was short-lived and Earth-1's original history was re-established.
