Earth-1 - After Disaster

Four storylines converge in this Universe. Two were products of the imagination of Jack "King" Kirby while the other two were products of other creative talents.

The After Disaster title comes from the Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth, series in which a young boy leaves the bunker he was raised in by his recently deceased grandfather to explore a post apocalyptic (after disaster) world. (The bunker was identifiied as Command D. How creative, eh? And the boy's grandfather was later revealed to be another Kirby creation: Buddy Blank, the former OMAC or One Man Army Corps.) Kamandi discovers that animals are now the dominant, speaking beings on Earth while humans have become growling, snarling savages. Kamandi befriends Ben Boxer, Steve, and Renzi (three humanoid mutants who can change from humans into armor beings by pressing their cyclo-hearts) as well as Dr. Canus (a dog) and Prince Tuftan (a tiger).

The two other storylines come from the Atomic Knights stories that were printed in DC's Strange Adventures in the 1960s and Hercules Unbound which was printed in the 1970s. The Atomic Knights were a group of adventures who banded together after the atomic World War III which occurred in 1986. Civilization had fallen, famine was everywhere, and the Atomic Knights sought to bring law and order to their country. The Knights found antique suits of armor that were capable of protecting them for a short time from raguns and rad-grenades and rode around on mutated Dalmatians. In Hercules Unbound, the god was released from his imprisonment by WWIII and traveled with some new acquaintances having adventures until ultimately he teamed up with the Atomic Knights.

It was later revealed that the Great Disaster in Kamandi's comics and WWIII were one and the same.
