Fans of DC and Marvel often discuss what would happen if characters from the two major comic book companies ever met. This had gone on for decades before DC and Marvel were finally able to jointly publish Superman vs. Spider-Man. This over-size edition was followed by another over-size titled Batman vs the Hulk. Later, the Teen Titans and the X-Men teamed up for another adventure. Post-COIE, DC and Marvel had other crossovers, most notably Batman and Captain America, DC/Marvel/Amalgam, and JLA/Avengers. The primary difference between the first four titles mentioned and the last two is that the first four occurred outside the continuities of both DC and Marvel and therefore had to occur on a crossover Earth where the DC and Marvel characters co-existed.
