 Isaac Preston b.3-20-1781 d.xxxx, son of Thomas Preston and his wife Mary, married Sarah Hurt on Sept. 25, 1800. She was the daughter of Elisha Hurt and Mildred Stratton Hurt. She was born 5-20-1785. They had 11 children, all born in Bedford Co., Virginia.

  1. Moses Hurt Preston b. 5-23-1805 married Elizabeth Tyree at Lynchburg, VA on 9-18-1827. He died 12-9-1855 in Richmond. They had 10 children all born in Richmond, VA.
  2. William Byrd Preston b.2-21-1808 d.7-29-1873 married Matilda Nelms on 12-22-1831. She died 10-3-1877. After the marriage, William settled in Roanoke Co. on land extending 500 acres known as "The Heights" located near the city of Roanoke. The home was in a beautiful location with extensive mountain views. He owned 100 slaves and was bitterly opposed to secession. When the war broke out, he told his sons Charles Isaac and M. T. Preston that if they did not enlist, he would. M. T. Preston enlisted as a private and with his bodyguard, Caesar, a slave, fought through the war and was with Gen. Lee at the surrender at Appromattox, VA. M. T. Preston was in charge of the Commissary Dept. at the Battle of Gettysburg, was in Gen. Pickett's Div. at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, when he was stricken with typhoid fever. Charles Issac Preston was in the cavalry. His children:
  3. Elisha Hurt Preston b.1-27-1810 married on 11-20-1833 Arabella J. Whitten. He died in Bedford Co., Va on 2-22-1848. They had 8 children all born in Bedford Co., VA:
  4. Thomas Jefferson Preston b.10-21-1812 married on 4-29-1840 Mrs. Alice J. Harvey, nee Hayden, but had no issue.
  5. Oliver Perry Preston b7-26-1814 d. 2-8-1835 unmarried.
  6. Isaac Newton Preston b. 8-28-1816 married first Mary Ann Lesiear of Alabama on 12-25-1842. Married second Miss. Yates of Massachussets. Isaac had issue by Mary Ann Lesiear:
    • Samuel Preston <1843>.
    • Mildred Preston <1845>.

  7. Mildred Jane Preston b.10-23-1818 married Charles Nelms on 11-4-1835. They moved to Salem, Alabama where they raised a large family, but no record.
  8. John Stratton Preston b. 10-27-1820 married Elizabeth Witt on 11-25-1846. They had 3 daughters:
  9. Joel Leftwich Preston b.2-18-1824 married Mary E. Robertson on 3-11-1846. He lived on his farm in Bedford Co. within a mile of his place of birth until the beginning of the Civil War. He was in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry and was wounded at Alda Loudon Co., VA in 1863. He suffered constantly from that time till his death in Richmond where he was sent for treatment. He died in Richmond 12-7-1898. His widow moved to Bluefield, WV. They had 7 children:

  11. Stephen Pleasant Preston b.4-21-1830 married on 7-30-1857 Susan Matilda Hole, dau. of Thomas Hole and Mildred Overstreet. He was mustered on 3-20-1862, 34th Regiment, Co. I, Va. Volunteers Infantry, Wise's Brigade. He was wounded in the right leg on 6-17-1864. Susan applied for a pension in 1900. The following children were listed in the 1880 census, Bedford, VA.:
    1. Sarah Mildred Preston b.ca.1858 m. Lewis Crouch. Sarah also married William Phillips and Thomas Collins. She was a widow again by 1900 according to the Va. Census in Liberty, Bedford County. The following children were listed: (For some reason Sarah took back the name Phillips after the death of Thomas Collins.)
      • Daisy Crouch b.5-1883 m. Malcom Layne.
      • William Phillips b.1-13-1889 m. O. Drewry.
      • Myrtle Virginia Collins b.1893 m. Mr. Foster.
      • Reuben Collins b.1897 adopted in 1902 by Morton Daniel of Farmville, VA., m. Irma Johnston on 1-6-1928 in Hanover Co., VA.
