Instructions for Using Chart

  1. Determine the name of the first common ancestor shared by the two people. For example, do they have the same grandparent or great grandparent? Put that ancestor's name in Block (1).
  2. For the first person, fill in their line of descent from the ancestor to them in the blocks along the top of the chart. For example, if the person's grandfather is in Block (1), put their parent in Block (2) and them in Block (3).
  3. For the second person, fill in their line of descent from the ancestor to them in the blocks along the left side of the chart.
  4. To determine the relationship between the two people, draw a line down the chart from the block containing the first person's name and another line across the chart from the second person. The block located at the intersection of these lines indicates the relationship between the two people.
  5. Note: None of the people in Blocks (2) through (6) at the top of the chart should be the same as the people in Blocks (2) through (6) at the side of the chart.
