David Preston    1778-1849

Information on this line supplied by Peggy Mayville. She is hoping someone can connect these Prestons to another line. They settled in Georgia about the same time as the Prestons who moved from Augusta Co., VA to Walton Co., GA., but we have no connection.

The line starts with a David Preston b.3-7-1778 in Ireland and died 9-30-1849 in Knoxville, Crawford County, Georgia. He married on 1-4-1799 Nancy McCann born 6-20-1781 in Ireland and died 1863 in Knoxville. Nancy was of Scotish descent. Apparently, David and Nancy lived briefly in Relations, KY, 1801-18xx. David Preston's name appears in Baldwin Co., GA, GU Dist, in 1810 and was the only Preston listed for that time period in Georgia. David was still in Baldwin Co. in 1815. According to their will they had the following children:

William bought and sold several pieces of property totaling about 580 acres, by 1853/54 he had sold all his property in Georgia and moved to Dale Co., Alabama where he purchased the Hunt place near Echo, the the Griggs Place between Corinth Freewill Baptist Church and Brown's Cross Roads. William served as Justice of the Peace from 1854-1865. Both buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery. William and "Tempie" had 10 children:
    1. Sarah "Sally" Preston b.1847 d.xxxx m. E. B. Jenkins. Sarah was born in Sumter Co., GA.
    2. John W. Preston b.xxxx d.xxxx never married, died in Civil War. Born in Sumter Co., GA and buried in Mobile, AL.

  6. Mary Jane Preston b.3-21-1821 d.11-8-1899 m. James Madison Mathews. Mary and James had one son:

Two other Prestons appear that may be connected to this family but no proof.

  1. George Washington Preston b.ca.1807 d.8-27-1835 in Knoxville, Crawford Co., GA. He married Elizabeth W. McCants. George left a will and named Andrew J. Preston, Administrator, and left a horse to his brother John Preston. There were two John Prestons living in Knoxville at the time but it could have been John son of David, but no proof. George and Elizabeth had one child.
  2. The other unconnected Preston is James Preston b.ca.1797/99 in Ireland who married Elizabeth Clark b.1798 in Ireland. James appeared in the August 1836 court, in Crawford Co., GA and swore oath to the United States, stating that they came to America in August 1832 from England and entering at Whitehall, NY. There is no record of a port of entry at Whitehall, NY., believe he meant leaving Whitehaven, Ire. and arrived NY. James and his family lived first in Crawford Co., GA and then moved to Dale Co., AL about 1857 and lived within a few houses of William Sanford Preston and Temperance Calhoun Preston. James and Elizabeth's daughter, Jane Preston Carswell lived next door to them. James and Elizabeth are buried in Bethael Cemetery, Echo, Dale Co., Alabama. Sure seems like they were connected but not mentioned in David's will.
