John Montgomery Preston b. 8-5-1788 d. 9-14-1861, second child of Walter Preston and Anne Montgomery, married twice. On 7-26-1818 he married Miss Ellen Wilson and they had three children. Secondly he married Miss Maria Thornton Carter Preston, daughter of Gen. Francis Preston (Smithfield Prestons). John Preston I was a wealthy merchant in Abingdon, VA, and was the first mayor of Abingdon. His 3 children by Miss Wilson were:

  1. Walter Preston b.7-18-1819 d.11-1867, graduated from Princeton Univ. in 1839 and then Harvard in 1842. He was elected to the Confederate Congress in 1861. A member of the Virginia Legislature, well known orator and lawyer. He married Miss Agatha Garnett Peyton, of Roanoke, VA. They had four children.
    • Elizabeth Arthur Preston m. Judge George W. Ward, of Winchester, VA and they had two children:
      • George W. Ward, II, died unmarried.
      • Rosalie Garnett Ward, married Mr. Anderson and moved to Western PA
    • Ellen Preston, m. Rev. Tyning of New York City and left one child.
    • Walter Montgomery Preston, unmarried.
    • Susan Madison Preston, died unmarried.
  2. James Wilson Preston b. 8-24-1821 d. 12-8-1881, second child of John M and Ellen Wilson, m. Miss Catherine A. Greenway b.6-13-1826 d. 1-2-1911. Married on Oct. 5, 1847. They had 6 children.
  3. Elizabeth Ellen Preston b.4-30-1824 d. 3-9-1896, only daughter of Ellen Wilson and John Montgomery Preston I, m. on 2-26-1852 General Arthur Campbell Cummings b. 10-1-1822 d. 3-19-1905. They called their home "Mont Calm", high on a hill in Abingdon. They had two children:

John Montgomery Preston I, son of Walter and Anne Montgomery Preston, married 2ndly Miss Maria Thornton Carter Preston of Abingdon. They had 2 sons;

  1. John Montgomery Preston II
  2. Charles Henry Campbell Preston
