Text below picture: John Angus RHEA born 29 May 1753, Langhorn Parrish Londonderry, Ireland, Lawyer, US Legislator, died 27 May 1832, Sullivan Co. TN. John Rhea was the first Representative to Congress from East Tennessee. Emigrated to America in 1769 with his parents Joseph and Elizabeth. John came to Sullivan County with his father in 1776 on an expedition against the Cherokee Indians. With his widowed mother and brothers he came back to Eastern TN in 1778, the year after the death of his minister father. Served during the revolution in the Virginia regiment of Colonel William Campbell. John was a color bearer at the battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777.
