Augustus Preston 1820 - 1891

The following data was supplied by Betty Higbee about her husbands ancestors. Any help in connecting this line would be appreciated.

Augustus Preston was the son of Gideon Vanclief Preston and Ann White and the GGG Grandson of James Preston and Sarah Scott.

Augustus Preston b.9-19-1820 d.3-27-1891 m. in July 1868 in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY Susan Rachel Calvin, dau. of John Calvin and Elizabeth Vanmeter. Not sure of Augustus' birth place but he lived and died in Ft.Knox, Hardin Co., KY and Susan and her parents were from Hardin Co. Augustus and Susan are buried in Calvin Cemetery, Ft. Knox, KY. Augustus and Susan had 5 children:

Note on Augustus: "...the farmers, in order to dispose of their surplus farm produce, would often take their produce on large flat boats down the Rolling Fork River, down to the Salt River to the Ohio River at West Point, KY. Then down the Ohio to the mississippi at Cairo, IL then down the Mississippi to New Orleans. There they would dispose of the load, sell the boat and walk back to Kentucky. My father was a carpenter, and even in his day, he used to help build boats to haul the produce to New Orleans." (written by Robert D. Preston in a letter dated 1941.)

• Mary Edith VanCleave b.5-31-1891 d.1-28-1957 m. Marion Virgil Higbee on 11-9-1912 in Monmouth, IL. Virgil was the son of Jesse Higbee and Julia Berry. Mary was born in Ft. Knox and died in Ft. Myers, FL.
• Samuel Newell VanCleave b.4-25-1895 d.9-1976
• Theodora Grace VanCleave b.9-25-1898 d.5-13-1914.
• Joseph William VanCleave b.7-18-1901 d.7-3-1903.
• Hazel Lee VanCleave b.4-28-1906.
• Vernon Webster VanCleave b.5-24-1910 d.ca.1941.
2. Robert Dexter Preston b.10-18-1872 d.8-27-1942 in Bakersfield, CA m. on 6-6-1907 in Buck Branch, TN Isabella N. MacDonald, dau. of Malcolm MacDonald and Clara Hienz. Robert was born in Stithton and died in Bakersfield, CA. Robert and Isabella had 6 children:

2. Claude Preston b.5-4-1910 d.5-4-1910 in Lawrenceburg, TN.

4. Pearlie I. Preston b.9-13-1913 in Monmouth, IL. m. Charlie Pollock on 9-16-1930 in Florence, AL. Pearlie and Charlie had 3 children all born in Lawrenceburg, TN.:
• Charles Preston Pollock b.12-31-1931.
• Robert Harvey Pollock b.9-6-1935.
• Shirley Ann Pollock b.10-15-1940.
5. Elmer V. Preston b.2-22-1916 d.3-24-1945. Born in Seaton, IL died in Wessel, Germany.
