FORMER DEPUTY TREASURER

An Attache of the Confederate Government

and a Good Soldier.

Mr. Seaton G. Tinsley, for eighteen years Deputy Treasurer of the city of Richmond, died at his home, 804 East Marshall Street, yesterday evening at 5:15 o'clock.   Deceased had been in failing health for two years, but had been actively engaged in business until the Wednesday before Christmas Day.  Death was due to heart disease, which had been aggravated by internal complications.

Mr. Tinsley was born August 13, 1836, at the old homestead, "Tottomy", in Hanover county.  He was the son of Mr. Thomas Garland Tinsley, who lived on his property in Hanover; and a brother of Mr. James G. Tinsley, of the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Company, and Dr. Alexander Tinsley, of Baltimore.  He had one sister, who survives him - Mrs. Harriet B. Taliaferro, of Orange, Va.

He is survived by his wife and six children - Miss Jennie G. Tinsley of Richmond (Aunt G), Mr. Wm. Fleming Tinsley of Clifton Forge, Mr. Thomas Tinsley of West Virginia, Mrs. J. K. Anderson of West Virginia (Aunt Fannie), Mr. Seaton G. Tinsley, Jr. of St. Louis and Mr. Samuel Greenhow Tinsley of Nashville, Tenn.

HIS BUSINESS CAREER

Mr. Tinsley came to Richmond as a young man, and was employed in Richardson's Carpet Store, and by Messrs. Burton and Greenhow, until the civil war broke out, when he entered the Treasury Department of the Confederate Government.  During the latter part of this war he served with General Lee, and surrendered with his chief at Appomatox.   After the war he returned home, and for four years devoted himself to agricultural pursuits.  He was appointed Assistant or Deputy Treasurer by the late S. C. Greenhow, with whom he had been for some time associated in business before the war.

In 1887, after eighteen years service in the Treasurer's office, and when the Greenhow administration was defeated, he entered the employ of the Virginia Ca Service Association, which came into existence about that time, and remained with it until his death.

On the 2nd of May 1860, Mr. Tinsley was married to Miss Fannie W. Gaines, of Richmond

The date and time of the funeral has not yet been arranged, but it will be delayed until the sons and daughter of Mr. Tinsley are able to come from their various homes.  It is expected that it will take place from Grace-Street Presbyterian Church tomorrow, and the interment will be made in Hollywood.  Rev. Dr. Jere Witherspoon will officiate.
