HOMES

Smithfield. Located on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, VA. Home built by William Preston and named for his wife, Susannah Smith. Built 1772 and restored 1964-68. Being on the frontier it was defended against Indians with a stockade, secret tunnel and chimney lookout. Inside it had wainscoting, Chinese chippendale stairways and elegant furnishings such as English regency chairs and banquet table. Picture and information from the August 1968 Techgram.
